Shin-Kiba: Home of a Struggling Lumber Industry
The area of Shin-Kiba has an interesting relation to water. First, its on reclaimed land and has docks all around it, but it rarely uses the water and the shores are neglected. Second, the lumber industry has a rich history of using the water as a way of transportation and for storage of wood, but it is now a place that is struggling with the changes in the construction industry.
The project proposes a different strategy to revitalize the area. One through which the warehouse typology, and thereby its character, is saved, but the usage becomes more diverse. A multi functional events centre that spreads itself out into the area then becomes an exemplar, and a symbol for the future possibilities of the area. The undervalued land (and water) has the potential to evolve to encompass more cultural amenities, social gathering, and education.
